Music in a minor key can make anything sound sinister. Just sing or play any childhood nursery rhyme in a minor key, and suddenly you're looking for "baby button eyes" or a demoniacally possessed Raggedy Anne.
The same thing goes for gubber, gigantic number 2 soft lead pencils.
The thing just seemed like a creepy sort of evil...not a diabolical or ultra-destructive force, but something that will actually be your friend for a while, until it TURNS.
